Old Delft Water Walk
We walk back towards the town hall, then via Waagsteeg to the Boterbrug. Boterbrug means Butter Bridge in Dutch. This 80-meter-long bridge connects the Wijnhaven (Whine Harbour) with the Oude Delft. It was completed in 1558 after a two-year construction period and was then called ‘s Heerenbrugghe (The Lord’s Bridge).
The large amount of water, protected from direct solar radiation, kept the temperature under the bridge very constant. This is the case especially in the middle of the bridge. A good place to store butter. Hence its name!
You can canoe underneath the bridge. But the winter in 1963 was so cold, that the water under the bridge froze and one could skate underneath!
